North Carolina Salary Scale Toolkit: Introduction to the online toolkit webinar
The salary scale toolkit is a free website and includes business, payroll, and salary scale resources for center based programs, family child care businesses, and ways for technical assistants, faculty in higher education, and providers of professional development to integrate these resources into your work.
The purpose of Level I training is to introduce participants to the newly developed salary scale toolkit. It will ensure participants are familiar with how to access the toolkit, how to navigate the toolkit, provide a basic overview of the content of the toolkit and the history of the model salary scale and toolkit development. This training is provided in an online, asynchronous format. This session is FREE and provides 1.5 hours of DCDEE clock hour credit. |

The Power of Feedback for Infants and Toddlers: Making the Most of Interactions
This session focuses on how caring adults provide feedback and guidance while infants and toddler engage in play and learning activities. Feedback is often viewed as a primary tool for teaching and showing respect. The session explores how feedback shows up in our interactions with infants & toddlers and how educators set up opportunities for feedback to occur. Participants will discuss strategies for intentionally embedding this type of language and interaction into daily teaching practices as well as considering what resources are available to explore the role of feedback in children’s learning & experiences. |

Encouraging Development of Visual Spatial Skills in Young Children: Bridging the Gender Divide
This session explores the gender differences in skills regarding spatial relationships between girls and boys and explains common reasons why this might exist. Participants are given several strategies and ideas for classroom activities to invite both girls and boys in learning spatial relationship skills while making intentional efforts to offer and extend learning toward girls to create a more equitable environment. The content is focused mostly for preschool age with some examples appropriate for younger schoolagers.

I Am Worried About This Child
Child care providers confront challenges daily in providing care and education for young children. Being on the front lines during the pandemic adds tremendous stress, too. This session focuses on common stress of worrying about a child or family and not knowing how to talk with the family about the concern or which community resources to connect the family with. The facilitators will offer strategies for success for teachers to help families see, hear, and understand the issue and think about next steps for action.

What is Science Identity and Why is It Important to Young Children?
Dr. Tan explores the definition of "science identity." The session takes a critical, sociocultural approach considering Dr. Tan's work with youth and educators both in the classroom and informal science programs. She focuses on empowering youth from non-dominant backgrounds to work with their teachers in creating hybrid spaces for meaningful science engagement, resulting in positive science identities and trajectories. During the session, participants explore the importance of hands-on experiences in nature and science as the foundation of early science identity development and how these experiences make lifelong impacts.

One Program's Story: Outdoor Learning Experiences
In this previously recorded live conference session, the presenters discuss how they encourage learning, particularly regarding concepts like math and science in a designed, naturalized learning environment outdoors. Buffy focuses on preschoolers while April focuses on infants and toddlers. They discuss how children are connected to learning concepts authentically through play and engagement in nature using natural items. Their program is a model outdoor learning site through the Natural Learning Initiative.

Model Work Standards: Part One (part one of a TWO part series)
This is intended for center based staff. We recommend one administrator and one teacher from your program to participate together, although individual participation is fine.
This webinar is divided into two parts, and each one will have it's own evaluation and certificate for completion. You will need to complete part I before participating in part II. Content from a live session has been used to create a webinar where we will explore how policies and practices impact how it feels to come to work and how we can improve our work environments using the Model Work Standards.
